News from the Board of the International Liquid Crystal Society
The International Liquid Crystal Society held its usual board meetings at the International Conference in Sendai in July. The membership of the board saw some changes; Prof. J. W. Goodby of Hull University, UK, was elected as the new President of the International Liquid Crystal Society, while the new Vice-President is Prof. P. Palffy-Muhoray of Kent State University, USA. We wish them well in their new positions. Prof. A. Fukuda, the outgoing president, was thanked for all of the hard work and time that he's invested in the society during his term as President. There were several other changes in the membership of the Board for the period 2000 to 2002. The following representatives from National Liquid Crystal Societies remain on the Board of Directors: Nandos Eber (Hungarian LCS), Antonio M. Figueiredo Neto (Ibero-American LCS), G. Abbate (Italian LCS), Shohei Naemura (Japan), V. Yu. Reshetnyak (Ukrainian LCS). New representatives from National Liquid Crystal Societies include: P. Raynes (British LCS), H. Finkelmann (German LCS), Ru-Pin Pan (ROC Taiwan LCS), S. Torgova (Russian LCS), A. Petrov (Bulgarian LCS). The Regional representatives serving a further term on the Board are S. Picken (Netherlands and Belgium), Stanislaw Urban (Poland), John Bechhoefer (Canada), Philippe Barois (France), Hideo Takezoe (Japan), S. Lagerwall (Scandinavia), N. Clark (USA). Several new members were elected to the Board: H. Kitzerow (Germany), C. Zannoni (Italy), I. Musevic (Slovenia), C.C. Huang (USA), P. Collings (USA) and R. Meyer (USA). The outgoing Membership Secretary, Oleg Lavrentovich presented a brief summary of the membership situation. The Society had 885 members from 51 countries as of July 20th 2000. Membership applications and renewals are available via the web. The new Membership secretary is R. Shashidhar. The Chair of the Honours and Awards Committee, Pat Cladis, reported that there had been 21 very good nominations for the Glenn H. Brown Awards and the Committee finally made four awards to: M. Oh-e, P. Mach, A. Yethiraj, and E. Nishikawa. Liquid Crystals Today will run a series of articles in future issues, written by each of the prize-winners, detailing their work. The ILCS Multimedia Prize was awarded to Hiroyuki Mori, for the results of his work in connection with technological applications. The International Society has three new Honoured Members: WOLFGANG HELFRICH, for his seminal work that launched many important fields in liquid crystal sciences and technologies, including electroconvection in liquid crystals, the twisted nematic display and entropically stabilized phase transitions through defect unbinding; JERALD ERICKSEN, for his fundamental work that has remained a pillar of our understanding of the viscous coefficients of nematic liquid crystals; and HELMUTH RINGSDORFF, for his fundamental contributions to bridge the gap between macromolecular chemistry, life sciences and the liquid crystalline state of matter.
