People in the news: Freedericksz Medal for Prof. S. Chandrasekhar

Prof. S. Chandrasekhar, Centre for Liquid Crystal Research, Bangalore has been selected for the award of the Freedericksz Medal for his ‘outstanding scientific work in the field of Physics of Liquid Crystals’.

The medal, the highest Russian award in the field of liquid crystals, was founded in honour of the famous Scientist, the late V. K. Freedericksz (1885–1944), who is considered to be the father of liquid crystal research in Russia.

The award is normally intended for members of the Russian Liquid Crystal Society, but non-members are also eligible by special decision of the Board. Two medals are given each year, one in Physics and the other in Chemistry. The first awards were given in 1997 to V. N. Tsvetkov and G. W. Gray, followed by A. Saupe and V. Shibaev in 1998, and then L. Blinov and D. Demus in 1999. The medallists for the year 2000 are S. Chandrasekhar and A. Sonin.
