Phillips announces details of new display technologies

Phillips have announced the design of the world's thinnest 3.5-inch QVGA thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) color module for mobile applications. The new device comes at a time when Phillips have also just announced the creation of a new active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) design, that allows for much smaller borders around the display - enabling greater active viewing areas for advanced mobile products such as 3G phone network devices. By designing the electrical tracks of the display parallel to the contact columns at the top or bottom, the active area more closely matches the display module, eliminating space around the viewing area and providing a narrow form factor for thinner end-products. Also through its joint venture, LG.Philips LCD, the company has developed a copper-based interconnect technology that will allow for more cost effective manufacturing of next-generation high-definition, large-scale LC displays.
