Roy Sambles elected as FRS

Another well-deserved award was made when Roy Sambles, Professor of Experimental Physics, University of Exeter, UK, was recently elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Roy is distinguished for his experimental studies of the optical properties of thin films and interfaces. Amongst his achievements have been the innovative use of optical guided mode techniques to determine the properties of thin liquid crystal layers and pioneering studies of surface plasmon modes.

Recently he has turned his attention to unravelling the extraordinary optical structures found in iridescent butterfly wings.

Date: August 2002
