Three-Five Systems unveil a new series of microdisplays

A press release by Three-Five Systems, Inc. announced that it will be unveiling three new 'light engines' containing the company's Brillian(TM) liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS(TM)) microdisplays. A light engine is a microdisplay-driven device that replaces the image-related components in a traditional CRT television product, at approximately one-third the weight and size. The light engines range in resolution from XGA (1024 x 768) or about 780,000 pixels to SXGA (1280 x 1024) or about 1.3 million pixels on small 0.5"-0.78" diagonal displays. Demonstrations of these products were held in Las Vegas, Nevada, in conjunction with COMDEX in November 2002. Bob Melcher, Three-Five's Chief Technology Officer says "These brand new microdisplay light engines allow us to now meet the different price points, development times, and resolution requirements for a variety of customer applications. The availability of a variety of engines will speed OEM time to market and decrease their development costs."
