Further manufacturing expansions

As reported in the previous issue of Liquid Crystals Today, Sharp have confirmed that it will invest another 267 million in a second System LCD Production Plant. The plant will be built in Mie, Japan and will become operational in October 2003. It is believed that the plant will increase the production capacity of System on Panel type devices (SystemLCDs). Over recent years Sharp and Sharp Laboratories of Europe has made considerable efforts to develop the process of depositing continuous grain silicon directly onto the glass of the display. This allows the integration and miniaturization of the driving circuitry and it's inclusion within the display. It also enables the customization of each panel, each with a unique driver. The new plant will also combine this process of manufacture with the further development of Sharp's "Smart display" technology. The addition of extra circuits to interrogate the signal to the display and allowing it to configure for minimum power consumption.
